Digital SLR Cameras Reach Mainstream Consumers as Nikon Launches Cross Country Tour to Promote New D50 Camera

Nikon Kicks off the 'D50 Digital Experience' Multi-City Road Tour, Proving To Consumers That Incredible Photos are Incredibly Simple to Take with a D50

MELVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- This fall consumers in major cities across America will have the chance to see for themselves what the buzz surrounding digital SLR cameras is all about, as Nikon today embarks on a national multi-city road tour to put its newest, lightest and easiest-to-use digital SLR camera - the D50 - directly into the hands of curious consumers. Nikon's "D50 Digital Experience" tour kicks off today at the St. Louis County Fair and Air Show in St. Louis, Missouri, and will continue on to stops in 11 major cities across the country, helping people experience firsthand how easy taking incredible photos can be using the D50.

As part of the tour, a custom wrapped SUV and box-trailer convoy will make its appearance at popular local fairs and festivals within each of the 11 cities planned. At each stop, a six-member tour team will be equipped to offer attendees a complete experience of Nikon's hot new D50 digital SLR camera. Large photo displays and plasma screens will offer valuable tips and tutorials, while interactive displays will offer detailed product features and information. The tour will also feature a "mock photo shoot" studio along with the latest Epson(R) inkjet printers, so attendees can shoot pictures and print samples from the D50 on the spot. Attendees can ask available Nikon and Epson experts questions on digital SLR photography and printing techniques, and even borrow a D50 camera to "test drive" it to their fullest satisfaction.

Within each city, Nikon will also give away a brand new D50 digital SLR camera with an 18-55mm Zoom-Nikkor lens, valued at $799.95. By entering the camera giveaway on-site at each event, participants will also be automatically entered to win one national prize - a spectacular photo-trek for two to Sweden with American PHOTO(TM) magazine and world renowned photographers and Nikon mentors, Joe McNally and Reed Hoffman. This sweepstakes can also be entered online at http://www.nikondigital.com/D50experience/.

"At Nikon we're constantly amazed with the reaction we get from consumers who try one of our D50 digital SLR cameras. Its virtually instantaneous response time, superb intuitive design, and simple layout of controls, all lend to a very satisfying initial experience that allows most people to take great pictures within minutes of picking up the camera. In fact their admiration for the camera is often topped by their appreciation of the remarkable image quality they see in prints made directly from the camera," said Steve Heiner, general manager, Marketing, Digital SLR Camera Systems at Nikon Inc. "Energized by this reaction, Nikon is taking this remarkable camera on the road with the D50 Digital Experience tour allowing thousands of people to try the camera and witness how quickly and easily they can take incredible photos with little or no effort," he added.

Digital SLR cameras have grown rapidly in popularity over the last several months and Nikon's recent introduction of the 6.1 megapixel D50 further spurred excitement and interest among a broad range of consumers including family memory-keepers as well as photo enthusiasts. The D50 Digital Experience tour will be an excellent resource for consumers to get a hands-on experience with the camera and judge its advantages for themselves.

Zoom Systems Expands at Major Airports, Begins Deployment to 10,000 New Locations

Zoom Systems Expands at Major Airports, Begins Deployment to 10,000 New Locations

Company Set to Usher in New Era of Automated Retail for Digital Music Players, Headphones, Cosmetics and More

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Zoom Systems announced today it is accelerating deployment of the company's new automated retail stores in airports, hotels, malls and even grocery stores in a move that will revolutionize traditional vending. Zoom is ushering in a new era of automated retailing by implementing networks of 40 square foot robotic stores that are placed in heavily trafficked locations and are open 24 hours a day. For the first time ever, leading brands can place products like digital music players, headphones, computer accessories and even cosmetics directly in the path of consumers, creating a new experience and generating revenue opportunities where none existed before.

"Zoom Shops are not your parents' vending machine," said Gower Smith, CEO and co-founder of Zoom Systems. "Unlike vending, we have developed the technology and intelligence to offer consumers the hottest products from $10 to $200 from the best brands. It's like shopping online, but consumers have the instant gratification of getting their product immediately."

Zoom plans to build a network of 3,000 robotic stores at high traffic locations over the next 24 months and expects its network to grow to 10,000 stores in the next five years. Zoom Shops are centrally networked, have a touch screen consumer interface and deliver product via a robotic arm.

Revolutionizing Vending, Changing Retail Forever

Zoom Shops will offer the same direct access to consumers that inspired vending, but do so with "state of the art" robotic stores. Zoom Shops feature a touch screen that delivers an experience similar to online shopping. Customers can view product information before they purchase. Rather than having your product dropped into a bin, Zoom Shops retrieve product via a robotic arm and carefully deliver it directly to the consumer. Patented optical technology ensures the product has been delivered before the customer's credit or debit card is charged for the purchase.

Zoom Shop product assortments are customized to each channel and offer up to 120 items in a secure, well-lit environment. Zoom Shops in airports offer digital music players, headphones, pre-paid mobile phones, digital cameras and computer accessories. Zoom Shops in hotels offer personal electronics and computer accessories as well as the same merchandise you would expect to find in a traditional hotel store such as medicines and personal care products.

Additionally, Zoom creates customized concepts for location partners. For example, Zoom Shops in grocery stores offer home office products such as ink cartridges and computer accessories.

"Just as ATMs extended banking services to locations far beyond the teller window, Zoom is extending the retail experience to thousands of locations where transactions weren't possible before. The possibilities for brand and location partners are limitless," Smith said.

Zoom Flies into Airport Expansion

Based on its initial success at San Francisco and Atlanta airports, two of the world's largest international airports, Zoom Systems recently signed new long-term agreements that will greatly expand the presence of its robotic stores in both.

"We're very pleased to be among the first locations in the world to offer Zoom Shops to busy travelers in our new International Terminal," said John Martin, General Manager at San Francisco International Airport.

Zoom is in discussions with other major airports around the country and expects to be in other metropolitan markets before the end of the year.

Zoom Shops Offer Hotel Guests 24x7 Experience

Zoom has also deployed Zoom Shops in many leading hotels. The four diamond, 667-room Argent Hotel in San Francisco installed its first Zoom Shop after closing an unprofitable gift shop. Data from the Argent Zoom Shop shows almost half of sales occur during hours when the previous gift shop would have been closed, generating new revenue for the hotel and providing better service for its guests. Zoom Shops in hotels also offer most of the same personal care, medicine, travel, electronics and other goods that were previously sold in the gift shop.

"The Zoom Shop allows us to offer the best products at any time that our guests need them," said Brian Hughes, General Manager of the Argent. "As hotel gift shops become less and less viable in today's high labor cost environment, the opportunity presented with the Zoom Shop was quite simply an opportunity to not say "no" to our guests when asked if we have a venue to purchase essential and convenience based products. The Zoom Shop was the logical replacement for a store that wasn't delivering revenue for the hotel."

Branded Zoom Shops Offer New Marketing, Retail Channel

Just as Zoom Shops can be customized to locations, they can also be customized to brands. For example a cosmetics company could customize a Zoom Shop so that it carried the look and feel of the brand and offered the best of its product line. Because the stores are located in high traffic consumer areas, these customized stores serve as impactful advertising and marketing opportunities as well.

"These customized Zoom Shops offer leading brands tremendous new opportunities to showcase their best products as well as new opportunities to sell these products at retail, while carrying their brand message to consumers in locations they would otherwise find difficult to access," said Rick Cusick, former merchandising executive at LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton, who recently joined Zoom as EVP of Merchandising.

Deep Retail Experience on Zoom Exec Team

Zoom executive management team, board of directors and advisors all have extensive retail backgrounds at leading brands that include Target, LVMH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton, Bank of America, Mattel and Compaq. Zoom executives and founders now own 40 percent of equity in Zoom after participating in a $12 million Series B financing, which closed in June 2005.

Other Zoom directors and advisors also participated in the Series B financing including U.S. Venture Partners' Phil Schlein, the former CEO of Macy's California and former board member at Apple Computer for eight years and Bruce Quinnell, Zoom Systems Chairman of the Board. Quinnell is former Vice Chairman, President and COO of leading retailer Borders Group and currently is also chairman of Hot Topic, one of the nation's most successful mall retailers.

About Zoom Systems

Zoom Systems is pioneering a new retail channel -- automated retail that places popular brands and high demand products directly in the path of consumers. These "state of the art" robotic stores utilize 40 square feet, carry only the world's most popular products and are located in high consumer traffic areas -- a retailing strategy that stands in a clear contrast to confusing, crowded and cluttered mega-stores. Zoom's robotic stores use technology to provide consumers simplicity, speed and easy access to products from high profile brands offering consumers a revolutionary new retail experience. Led by a dynamic team of experienced retail executives, Zoom plans over the next two years to implement thousands of these robotic stores in high traffic locations such as airports, hotels, malls and grocery stores. http://www.zoomsystems.com/

Lexmark applauds law enforcement authorities for success in conviction, prison sentence for counterfeiter of laser cartridges

Lexmark applauds law enforcement authorities for success in conviction, prison sentence for counterfeiter of laser cartridges

LEXINGTON, Ky., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE:LXK) today applauded the success of law enforcement authorities in obtaining a conviction and prison sentence for an individual charged with marketing counterfeit Lexmark laser cartridges.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020819/LEXMARKLOGO )

David C. Lasota Jr., convicted of trafficking in counterfeit goods and using counterfeit marks in violation of federal law, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and ordered to pay restitution of $63,406.80 to Lexmark.

Based on records seized in a multi-state investigation, more than 13,000 counterfeit Lexmark toner cartridges were fraudulently marketed. Working with Lexmark and Stumar Investigations, the Allegheny County Police Department in Pennsylvania, the Clifton, New Jersey, Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the United States Postal Inspection Service issued multiple search warrants in an effort to stop the sale of these toner cartridges.

This case continues efforts by Lexmark over the past several years to preserve the quality of the printing experience involving genuine, Lexmark- branded equipment. Customers using counterfeit supplies products risk poorer equipment performance, low supply yields, inferior print quality, toner or ink leakage, high cartridge failure rates and increased equipment downtime - all of which cost the customer time and money.

"We applaud this successful prosecution and we thank the authorities involved for demonstrating their commitment to protecting customers from these fraudulent activities. Counterfeiting is a serious crime that defrauds customers and we at Lexmark intend to do everything we can to support the authorities in the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties," said Vincent J. Cole, Lexmark vice president and general counsel.

Lexmark is a founding member of the Imaging Supplies Coalition (ISC), which has launched a consumer-education initiative called "When in doubt, check it out." To protect customers from being victimized, this program allows those who question product quality or authenticity to submit products anonymously to the ISC to determine if the supplies are counterfeit. Since the inception of the program, the ISC says counterfeit awareness has increased significantly among distribution channels. Both distributors and consumers can check the ISC Web site (http://www.isc-inc.org/) for further information on supplies fraud.

Consumers can protect themselves by purchasing genuine supplies through a manufacturer's authorized channels. In addition, consumers should always be cautious of prices that are well below market standards.

If you are in the U.S. and suspect a Lexmark supplies product is counterfeit, you can always call Lexmark directly by dialing 1-888-539-1551, then selecting option #1.

Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upholds Lexmark Cartridge Return Program

Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upholds Lexmark Cartridge Return Program

LEXINGTON, Ky., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a program under which Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE:LXK) offers customers discounted laser printer cartridges in exchange for agreeing to return the used cartridges only to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020819/LEXMARKLOGO )

The case was before the court as a result of an appeal by the Arizona Cartridge Remanufacturers Association Inc. (ACRA), challenging Lexmark's Cartridge Return Program. Joining every other court that has ruled upon challenges to the Lexmark cartridge Return Program (formerly known as Prebate), the Ninth Circuit reaffirmed the legality of this highly successful and environmentally friendly program.

Lexmark offers customers discounts on new cartridges in return for their agreement to return the used cartridges only to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling. Lexmark uses the cartridges in its remanufacturing business. In order to facilitate competition and customer choice, Lexmark has always offered cartridges without a discount that may be remanufactured by anyone for those customers who desire it.

"The court has ruled in support of customer choice. This is a victory for customers and their right to choose to receive a discount in exchange for a simple agreement to return the empty cartridge to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling. Lexmark's program is good for customers, good for the environment, and fair to the competition," said Vincent J. Cole, Lexmark vice president and general counsel.

U.S. Army Includes Zebra Technologies Partners in Seven RFID Purchase Agreements

U.S. Army Includes Zebra Technologies Partners in Seven RFID Purchase Agreements

Zebra partners awarded blanket purchase agreements (BPAs) to provide EPC-compliant printer/encoders

VERNON HILLS, Ill., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Zebra Technologies (NASDAQ:ZBRA), a global leader in delivering on-demand printing solutions for business improvement, announced that its radio frequency identification (RFID) printer/encoders have been included in seven new Group 3 blanket purchase agreements (BPAs) issued by the U.S. Army Contracting Agency (ACA) Information Technology, E-Commerce and Commercial Contracting Center (ITEC4). Each BPA allows each partner to sell an indefinite quantity of electronic product code (EPC)-compliant printer/encoders to the Army. The BPAs last for two years. Several models of Zebra RFID printer/encoders are included.

All seven Zebra partners who bid were awarded BPAs. The winning Zebra partners are: CDO Technologies; Cheval Rouge; Lowry Computer Products; RSI; Supply Chain Logic; WFI Government Systems; and SYS-TEC. Each company is a Zebra authorized government reseller.

"Our partners' extraordinary success in earning these BPA awards reflects their strong understanding of the Army's RFID requirements and the ability of Zebra printer/encoders to meet them," said Bob Cornick, vice president and general manager of RFID for Zebra. "We have worked closely with the DoD and our partners to develop RFID solutions that succeed in many challenging environments."

The U.S. Department of Defense is investing heavily in RFID technology to improve its supply chain visibility and efficiency. Group 3 is part of a series of BPAs issued for RFID equipment and supplies. Products provided under the Group 3 BPAs must be compliant with EPCglobal Class 1 standards. Zebra also provides other equipment and supplies to the DoD and U.S. government under separate government services administration (GSA) awards and other agreements.

Zebra has been researching and developing RFID technologies for nearly 10 years. It was the first company to produce an integrated, on-demand RFID printer/encoder more than five years ago. Today, Zebra has the broadest printer/encoder product line for use in supply chain applications. Zebra is playing an active role in the development of RFID "smart label" technology, standards and applications for supply chain and business improvement programs designed to help suppliers to the U.S. Department of Defense, Wal-Mart and other retailers meet the RFID EPC compliance labeling requirements. Zebra's RFID printer/encoders support multiple RFID protocols and are easily upgradeable to support Gen 2. Zebra is the only manufacturer to have publicly demonstrated Gen 2 capability in a printer/encoder.

According to a Venture Development Corp. (VDC) study and AMR Research, Zebra is the RFID market leader with more printer/encoders sold than any other company worldwide. An industry pioneer, Zebra first made its name helping customers harness the power of bar codes, and has now captured the largest installed base of both high frequency and EPC ultra-high frequency (UHF) models in every geographic region.

Users can swap out powerful peripherals, such as a DVD+/-RW, +R double layer drive (not all DVD media/formats are universally compatible) or an 80GB (GB means one billion bytes when referring to hard drive capacity) hard drive bay unit. Each of these optional accessories is cross-compatible with all three size configurations of the BX Series.

The BX Series is also distinguished by a longer lifecycle than the typical retail shelf life for consumer notebooks, ensuring businesses a stable platform. Further, the line is Cisco v.3-compliant, making it easy to deploy over existing corporate networks that utilize Cisco management applications.

"By providing a single platform and cross-compatible peripherals the latest edition to the VAIO Professional line provides an innovative approach and flexible option for companies," said Mike Abary, vice president of VAIO product marketing for Sony Electronics. "We believe that this new modular solution combined with leading-edge security features will substantially reduce IT manpower and the total cost of ownership for businesses."

Security is Top Priority

The BX Series notebook line incorporates a Trusted Platform Module (TCG Ver.1.1b compliant) to set the level of security on a specific client/user basis. Data can be encrypted over a local network or over the Internet so IT managers have the ability to dial in the specific level of access.

Additionally, the BX Series features an integrated biometric fingerprint sensor, which delivers personal security and eliminates the need to remember different corporate passwords. With the incorporation of a biometric fingerprint sensor, IT managers are freed from tedious password reset calls.

Communication Means Productivity

Select models of the BX Series also incorporate WWAN access to Cingular's nationwide EDGE network for connection to the Internet just about anywhere there is Cingular cellular coverage. Equipped with Sony's SmartWi(TM) technology, the BX Series allows users to easily toggle between various connectivity options including WWAN, WLAN for connections at home, office or hotspots (requires compatible access points); or Bluetooth(R) technology for communication with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals (may vary as not all Bluetooth devices are compatible) such as a PDA, cellular phone or wireless headset.

Outfitted with an optional built-in camera and pre-loaded with Sony's Instant Video Everywhere(TM) or IVE service powered by GlowPoint, the BX Series is ready for instant real-time video conferencing (service subscription and broadband required). Armed with these capabilities, workers can have virtual face-to-face meetings whether participants are in the office or off-site.

The model line also utilizes an advanced power-saving feature for mobile usage called VAIO Power Management Viewer(TM), for setting power modes to control the balance of stamina and performance required.

VAIO Cares

Exclusively for the business customer, Sony offers VAIO Care(TM) (www.sony.com/vaiocare) a new total lifecycle management program for all VAIO Professional notebooks. From planning and acquisition through disposal, VAIO Care supports a business's needs throughout the life of the product. Components of the VAIO Care include consultation services, extended service and accidental damage protection options and a trade-in program. VAIO Care also offers dedicated technical support for an organization's IT team.

The VAIO Professional BX Series notebook line will be available in mid-October, starting at about $1,300, through value-added resellers, direct market resellers and Sony's direct SMB portal. More information about the BX Series is available online at www.sony.com/vaiobx.

Portable Fuel Cell Rental Program

Portable Fuel Cell Rental Program

New Program Offers Fuel Cell Power for Remote Communication, GPS, Laptop and Surveillance Equipment

MANTECA, Calif., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sandpiper Technologies, Inc. (STI) announced the Fuel Cell Power Rent-to-Own Program.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050830/SFTU006 )

"This is the first time any company has rented a modern, methanol-powered fuel cell so clients can evaluate portable fuel cells or solve a critical but temporary power problem without purchasing a system," said CEO John Christensen.

Fuel cell prices have plummeted 70% from three years ago, making this technology cost effective. Weekly rentals are calculated from $99 to $149 depending on the total number of contracted weeks, plus power used.

STI's new Rent-to-Own Program allows the first-time user to try the fuel cell for at least two weeks with a 100% rental credit towards immediate purchase. STI's standard rental credit of 50% applies towards later purchases.

Unlike traditional battery "charge-use-recharge" cycles that require the battery be disconnected during the recharge cycle, the fuel cell acts as an "intelligent" battery charger that can remain connected and won't overpower the electronics. Power-critical users will appreciate the nonstop power for days, weeks, months because a unique feature maintains power during fuel cassette changes so users never have to power down their electronics.

The STI Fuel Cell Remote Power System is a self-contained, portable 50 watt 12 Volt methanol-fueled Remote Power System (RPS). The system weighs 28 pounds in a weatherproof case and each 5.0 liter fuel container weighs 10 pounds.

"The fuel cell is more than a power source," noted Christensen. "It's a labor saving device that is much easier to mobilize than lead batteries or power generators. The fuel cell typically replaces a 75-pound battery and can power equipment such as cell phones, laptop computers, GPS and video surveillance systems."

"Another benefit of the STI remote power system is reduced work-related injuries. Many of our clients previously had to lug heavy batteries long distances into remote areas. This fuel cell is a Godsend."

STI offered fuel cells two years ago with an eye towards wildlife research clients in the Arctic, Antarctic, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and remote island locations.

Sandpiper Technologies now offers this fuel cell technology for rent or purchase to researchers, law enforcement, search and rescue, marinas, boat owners and emergency power consumers.

The California-based corporation offers free technical support to customers needing assistance calculating their remote power needs. Founded in 1994, STI manufactures custom video systems, probes and accessories for biologists, arborists, military, law enforcement and search and rescue applications. CEO Christensen has over 40 years' experience in optical, electromechanical and electronic design engineering and spearheads the technical support team.

Micrel Introduces 'Kickstart' Power Distribution Switches

Micrel Introduces 'Kickstart' Power Distribution Switches

MIC2014/15/16 Featuring New 'Kickstart' Capability Facilitate Surge Management

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in IC analog, high bandwidth and Ethernet solutions, today added to its family of high-current protected power switches. The MIC2014/15/16 chips, featuring Kickstart current limiting, bring a new level of adaptability to peripheral power management. The chips are part of the family of MIC20xx power distribution switches introduced earlier this month. The new product line is aimed at applications requiring current limiting as protection against short circuits, including PCs, Set-Top-Boxes, Game controllers and USB host devices. The MIC2014/15/16 are currently available in volume quantities and in two package options; SOT-23 and 2 x 2mm MLF(TM). Pricing starts at $0.75 in 1K quantity for SOT-23 and $0.85 in 1K quantity for MLF.

Micrel's Kickstart feature enables current limit protection for a wide variety of devices. Many consumer devices now require an initial burst of power, well above their steady state operating level, to get up and running. In turn, this initial surge presents a problem to standard current limiting switches because they're designed to restrict these sudden surges in current. Their response is incompatible with the peripheral's needs.

"The advent of portable mass storage devices has changed the peripheral power landscape," noted Scott Brown, director of Mixed-Signal and RF Products, Micrel. "Micrel's new family of high-side power switches is designed to act intelligently in these situations. The Kickstart feature permits momentary high-current surges to pass through the switch unrestricted, thereby feeding the device the burst of power it needs. The result is trouble free peripheral operation without any sacrifice in overall system safety."

The MIC2014/15/16 all feature Kickstart current limiting. The ICs offer 70mohm typical on-resistance, fault flagging and slew rate control -- all in the smallest form factors available on the market today. These ICs are capable of serving multiple (USB) ports to provide both cost and space savings. Standard features include a 2.5V to 5.5V operating range, output Enable control input, thermal protection, under voltage lock-out, low quiescent current and fault masking that prevents nuisance alarms on current surges or hot plug events.

Micrel führt 'Kickstart'-Stromverteilungsschalter ein

Micrel führt 'Kickstart'-Stromverteilungsschalter ein

SAN JOSE, Kalifornien, August 30/PRNewswire/ --

- MIC2014/15/16 mit der neuen 'Kickstart'-Fähigkeit erleichtern
Stromstosskontrolle
